Abraham Lincoln

A doccie series made for the History Channel, with director Malcolm Veniver, had me jumping through hoops. With a very tight budget and a small crew, I had to recreate real characters as perfectly as possible. Malcolm's eye for detail left no fly away out of place and I was really challenged by recreating Abraham on Graham Sibley in 4 different ages of his life spanning from 21 - 56.

While I usually love running a larger team, this was a delightful change. Despite the challenges of working in COVID, we managed to create a really authentic-looking doccie drama. All photographs from Joe Albas.

Warrior

After years under the wing of several world renowned make up and hair designers I was interviewed to design my own production.

Warrior is an American martial arts crime drama television series that is based on an original concept and treatment by Bruce Lee, and is executive-produced by his daughter, Shannon Lee, and film director Justin Lin. Jonathan Tropper, known for the Cinemax original series Banshee. Set in the 1800’s San Francisco played into my experience and love of working with wigs. Putting together a team that would support me in manufacturing the wigs as well as keeping the quality on screen was my main objective.

Despite the network not wanting to renew it was so popular that the fans rallied to get a season 3.

One Piece

Bringing manga to life is a real challenge and with such a well-known popular manga, I knew the stakes were high. With the best team in South Africa in place with me we produced all of the wigs ourselves. Working through a vigorous colouring and testing process to get to the final product.

With diverse and interesting characters I felt at home running a large team to create the live-action of One Piece. All of these photographs are from Joe Albas and Amanda Ross-McDonald.

The Watch

Loosely based on Terry Pratchett’s The Night Watch, my team and I rose to the challenge of creating a mystical world. Creativity was unbounded as I pushed the team to new limits. Creating a fantasy in a crowd of witches, goblins, hybrid humans and part animal part fantasy human-like characters.

With incredible visions and the ability to follow my brief, the team created brilliant fantasy characters that earned us a Royal Television Society win.

All the new watch photographs are from Ilze Kitshoff.
